A Family of Believers

Close family, beautiful parties, wonderful food, and life long friends.

Could you think of something worth aspiring to more?

Grandmother, Grandfather, my cousin Beth, my sister Katie, and myself.
At my Grandfather's 80th Birthday weekend, I realized that there is nothing more valuable.

Last Friday, I drove home from Birmingham and walked into a house full of my parents friends laughing, eating, and enjoying being together once again.  Like any good party, the food was great, but the stories were better! Some of the stories I've heard thousands of times, and some of the stories I heard for the first time that night.  But sitting there with my parents closest friends and the best story tellers you'll ever meet, it was so beautiful to be reminded how how much love and joy is shared amongst the believers that once made up Roswell Street Baptist.  I felt more at home and enjoyed myself more that night with those adults in their fifties than I have with anyone in their twenties in a long time.

Then Saturday was the party at the Club with, shall we say, our seasoned friends.  Around those tables sat the movers and shakers of Marietta, even some of West Cobb's royalty.  They were laughing about past adventures, projecting to the future, reflecting on past pain, and unknowingly encouraging the youngest guests: my cousin, my sister, and I.  As I looked around at the women that I admire most in this world (lets face it- its the great woman who makes the great man), I was so encouraged to not give up just because my circumstance (aka. this gosh awful economy) is throwing me for a loop and to hold fast to my convictions.

After the parties were over and everything had been cleaned and put back in its placed, I realized how blessed I am to be from such a wonderful family back home- and I'm not just referring to the ten people who know Dr. Price as "Grandfather".  Through days of heartache and days of joy, these people all share such love for each other and for their Lord.  All of those friendships were bread in church, and crazy enough, most of the Friday night guest meet in singles Sunday School (the only encouragement here is that they hated it too).

I also realized how valuable time together is.  I guarantee that ten years ago not one of them would have thought that they would have all been scattered about because of a church split (more like blunt force hack-apart).  The time we have with friends and family is so valuable and should be treasured. But at the same time, we need these friends to encourage us to send us out into the world for our next chapters.  And that is exactly what they have all done for me.  Sure, I may have just two grandparents and a family of four that share my name, but my family is so much bigger than that.

Who says you can't go home?

Knowing that I always can go home (to open arms) is what gives me the strength to stand on my own, and thats exactly what family should do for each other.

Current Obsession

For those of you who follow Vintage Mulberry, this will be old news, but I am so in love with the new works of Emyo in our Mountain Brook shop.  Emyo or Emily Ozier is an artist from Memphis, TN, and her works capture wonderfully southern scenes, with deep texture & rich colors.

An Evening with an Icon

It was 5:17pm, and there I was talking with one of Elle Decor's 2011 A List Designers.  Thats right, this little girl from Marietta got to meet and speak with Suzanne Rheinstein before tonights lecture at Architectural Heritage in Birmingham.

Suzanne was born and raised in New Orleans, and her southern influences can't help but peak through her designs, even if she did trade the French Quarter for a house in West Hollywood.

In the short few minutes we spoke, it was easy to see her love for fine antiques.  Each interior of hers uses them in such a way as to highlight each piece's beauty, but never overwhelm the room.

Her current book, At Home features the three images above.  These are taken of her New York pied-a-terre were she is able to stroll down the block to spend time with her grand children.

These twin canopies are just some of the glimpses she gives into her home in the aforementioned book.  The soft folds and pleats of the green silk create such a warm environment that it is hard to imagine anyone would leave these beds.

Since the topic of tonights lecture was the evolution of her personal garden, it is only fitting to use an image of her favorite place on earth.  Sadly, I couldn't find many professional images, but her garden (much like her interiors) is definitely top of the line.

Sweet Dreams

I love, love, love a contrast in materials.

Some of the best? Distressed wood and soft linens.  Fabulous headboards keep catching my eye on Pinterest, and after a long week of work, I guess they just keep pulling me in!

[ok, its not wood, but gosh thats a great statement!]

Enough of these beds- I'm going to crawl into mine!

Who Shot Rock?

Armed with two girlfriends & a fabulous new pair of white jeans,
last week I went to see for myself Who Shot Rock and Roll.
Pink Floyd will forever remind me of my favorite design professor & life long PF groupie, Ken Brazil.
I am so glad that the Birmingham Museum of Art chose to bring this exhibit to my great, little city and that a young professionals event gave me an excuse to go see it.

Every image seemed to be more impressive than the last.  Of course the characters in each photo bring so much personality and life to each image, but the photographers artistic eye made me want to linger on.

Moves like Jagger, eh?
These images are just incredible.  I mean common, they were taken way before being a photographer was trendy, and before it became a rule that you had to take pictures in front of bricks before you can get married.

What can I say? The girl from Atlanta would find the only two rappers present, & shocker, I was on my phone too.
Its no secret that I love wondering museums with friends.  But when you add such an entertaining exhibit, it guaranties a great night for everyone (even the friends who haven't been to a museum outside field trips).

So if you're in Birmingham & haven't been yet, you simply must check it out.
And hey, I bet you could twist my arm to go again!

Help A Sister Out

Small Confession: I am completely addicted to coffee table books.  I have stacks and stacks of these gorgeous, glossy books ready and willing to help give inspiration at a moments notice.

Well, my obsession has gotten out of hand. My shop in Mountain Brook has started selling books.  Mrs. Pattie and I have been spending hours on the computer analyzing tiles for our shop to carry, and we need your help.

What are some of your favorite southern, antique, or lifestyle tiles?
